Robert Alden Rhein

Robert Alden RheinRobert Alden Rhein was born Aug. 18, 1933, in San Francisco and died Dec. 25, 2017, at age 84.

He was raised in Oakland and graduated from Castlemont High School. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a member of the Cal crew. He graduated from Cal in 1955 with a bachelor of science in engineering physics.

He met his wife, Ellen, at Cal and they were married in 1956. He received his master of science in mechanical engineering at the University of Pittsburgh while working at Westinghouse Commercial Atomic Power.

They moved to Mercer Island, Wash., where Bob attained his Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of Washington in 1962.

They moved to California, where Bob worked at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In 1980 the family moved to Ridgecrest, where Bob worked for the Naval Weapons Center at China Lake.

He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic parish in Ridgecrest. In 2000 he retired to San Diego.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ellen; siblings Rex Rhein and Cindy Parent; children Alden, Mark, Kathleen, Dirck and Jane; 15 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
