At press time, Kern County Elections officials were spending their last day in Ridgecrest gathering candidate filings for local races, as the Aug. 10 filing deadline neared.

So far, incumbents Amy Covert, Tim Johnson and Kurt Rockwell — are the only candidates who have filed for the three open seats on the Sierra Sands Unified School District Board of Trustees.

Incumbents Russ Bates and Jim Paris are also the only candidates to pull papers for the two open seats on the Indian Wells Valley Airport District Board of Directors.

Incumbent Peter Brown and challenger Stan Rajtora have pulled papers for the two available seats on the IWV Water District Board of Directors. If incumbent Chuck Cordell does not pull papers by the Aug. 10 filing deadline, challengers will be granted another five business days to file.

Roger Bell is the only candidate to file for the Inyokern Community Services District Board of Directors.

Races handled by the city, whose filing period is open until Aug. 9, include one seat for Mayor and two seats for City Council.

Current Mayor Peggy Breeden has pulled papers, as has challenger Tom Wicknich.

City Council incumbent Mike Mower had pulled papers, along with challengers Reese Hogg, Marshall “Chip” Holloway, Amy Belasco, Scott Hayman and Scott Leahy.

If incumbent Eddie Thomas fails to pull papers by deadline, challengers in that race will also have another five business days to file.
