Candidates seeking local offices continue to trickle in as the Aug. 9 filing deadline nears.

At press time, Mayor Peggy Breeden remained the only candidate to file for that seat. For City Council, Reese Hogg III was joined by Chip Holloway, Amy Belasco and Loren Scott Hayman, who have begun the process to vie for the two seats up for reelection.

Those races are handled by Ridgecrest City Clerk Ricca Charlon.

Kern County Elections officials, who are responsible for the rest of the local offices, were on hand at the Kern County Administrative complex yesterday to accommodate candidates filing papers for the Indian Wells Valley Airport District Board of Directors, Sierra Sands Unified School District Board of Trustees, IWV Water District Board of Directors and Inyokern Community Service District.

At press time Incumbent Russ Bates had pulled papers for one of the two open seats on the airport board. Incumbent Amy Castillo-Covert had pulled papers for one of the three open seats on the school board.

No candidates had pulled papers for water board or CSD.

Elections officers will return to the county complex on Thursday, Aug. 2, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m.

The candidate filing period closes on Aug. 9. If one or more incumbent fails to pull papers in a given race, the period for applying for that seat is extended five days.
