Kiwanis annual Child Spree charity is Aug. 4

The Kiwanis Club of Ridgecrest will be holding its annual Child Spree on Saturday, Aug. 4, at 8 a.m. at Walmart.

Volunteers will help eligible children purchase $80 in clothing for the new school year.

The event has been going on for more than 20 years, and started when Mervyns was still open. Last year, the club was able to provide new school clothing for 61 young children. The Family Resource Center has helped the Kiwanis Club to identify and sponsor the deserving children for the event.

Thanks to the generous donations of many individuals and organizations in our community, the Kiwanis Club is able to assist more students. So far, this year, the Kiwanis Club has contributed $2,000 for the Child Spree and has received donations from WACOM of $650, Elks Lodge $500, Ridgecrest Regional Hospital $400, Rotary Club $175, McDonalds $160, Warren’s Automotive $160, Lions Club $160, ATB Travel $160, Gary Charlon $100, Entron Systems $80, Adams Jewelry $80, Navy Federal Credit Union $80, and Bachman Family Dentistry $50.

Based on the donations received so far, the Child Spree will be able to help 59 students receive new school clothing. With several weeks to go, it is possible with the support of the community, to surpass last year’s total of 61 students helped. Donations may be made to the Kiwanis Club, P.O. Box 42, Ridgecrest, California 93556.

Volunteers are also needed to assist the students in selecting new clothing. Participants will be provided with the clothing sizes for the students and should arrive at Wal-Mart at 7:30 a.m. on the day of the event to receive instructions and be assigned to a student.
