Filing period opens for local races

Filing period  opens for  local racesThe candidate filing period for locally elected offices opened Monday, July 16, but by press time papers had been pulled for only two of those races.

According to City Clerk Ricca Charlon, at press time, Peggy Breeden has pulled papers for the seat of City Mayor — for which she will be seeking her third two-year term.

Reese Hogg III has pulled papers for one of two open City Council seats. Incumbents Eddie Thomas and Mike Mower had not yet pulled papers at press time.

According to a spokesperson in the Kern County Elections Offices, candidates have not yet pulled papers for any other local races.

For the Sierra Sands Unified School District Board of Directors, three four-year seats are up for re-election. Those seats are currently held by Kurt Rockwell, Tim Johnson and Amy Covert.

The IWV Water District Board of Directors has two four-year seats, currently held by Peter Brown and Chuck Griffin, up for reelection.

The two four-year seats currently held IWV Airport District Board of Directors Russ Bates and Jim Paris are also up for reelection.

According to Charlon, the filing period is open until Aug. 9. However, if one or more incumbent in a given race fails to file papers by that deadline, the period will be extended five days.
