Nathaniel Rusher arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah, on June 19 to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He spent the month before that at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, where he took classes and received training on how to better help and serve others while on his mission.

Rusher is not afraid of the hard work and dedication that a mission requires. He has achieved other challenging goals. For instance, he toured Kuk Sool Won martial arts tournaments with a competition team, and took first place in the world championship in Houston, Texas, in his division two years in a row.

As for his mission, Rusher is working hard to achieve his goal of simply “bring(ing) light into others’ lives.” One of his favorite Biblical scriptures is Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

Being able to serve a mission has not been easy for Rusher. “It’s taken me over five years and countless trials and hardships to be able to serve a full-time mission, but persevering and enduring them while trying to keep a smile on my face has been possible because of the support of my Heavenly Father and my friends and family,” he said.

“I know how hard it can get sometimes living day to day, not feeling like you are worth anything, but I know that there is always hope … If you persevere and hold on to what you truly desire in life, then you can achieve the things you dream of and will be given a happiness that cannot be measured.”

Rusher will serve for two years in the Salt Lake area before returning to Ridgecrest. “Uplifting and bringing love and light into others’ lives is the only way to bring true lasting happiness into your life as well as the lives of others,” said Rusher. “I believe it’s more powerful to let your example reflect who you are rather than words.”
