Abbott named Vet of the YearRidgecrest veteran and tireless volunteer John Abbott returned from the state capitol last week after being honored by Assemblyman Vince Fong as Veteran of the Year in the 34th District.

“John Abbott’s service and sacrifice for our country, and to Kern County, is the gold standard for all of us,” said Fong. “He has dedicated his life to helping and defending others.”

Abbott’s service in the U.S. Army from 1966-69 included a tour of duty in Vietnam. He also served in the U.S. Navy from 1975-93, retiring with numerous commendations as a senior chief petty officer.

Following his distinguished military career, Abboty dedicated his time as a community volunteer to numerous organizations, including the Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert and Police and Community Together.

“John Abbott is a quiet warrior who proudly served his country and who now is most generous in serving our community,” said Tex Hoppus, president of HSUMD.

“While John is uncomfortable when recognized for his service to others, our assemblyman could not have chosen a more worthy veteran and volunteer for this honor.

“John is everything we would all want in an exemplary citizen.”

Abbott has accrued more than 4,000 hours of volunteer time and can be seen almost daily fulfilling his duties as building manager for the Historic USO Building or as commander of the PACT unit.

Earlier this year, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy presented Abbott with the many medals and commendations he had earned, but never received, during his lengthy military service.

“It has been my privilege to serve our nation for so many years in the United States Army and Navy,” said Abbott.

“This is a tremendous honor and I look forward to continuing to serve others in my community.”

Joining him on his trip to the capitol was his wife, Norma.
