NAWCWD sponsors STEM Summer Camp

NAWCWD sponsors STEM Summer CampElijah Colpitts teaches math — from basic to trigonometry — to the 80 students involved in a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Summer Camp, sponsored by the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division. NAWCWD partnered with Sierra Sands Unified School District to bring in CodeChangers, a group that teaches summer camps for STEM applications ranging from web development to computer programming to robotics to design. SSUSD helped identify candidates to participate in the four-day camp held earlier this week, and NAWCWD paid the nearly $300 fee per student. According to Laura Hickle, who is working on a STEAM grant for the school district, the summer camp concept works hand in hand with the project-based learning style she is working to help bring into local schools. “This gives the students an opportunity to dive deep into the applications of STEM-related instruction — learning problem solving, critical thinking and all the other 21st-century skills we want our kids to have.” — Photo by Laura Austin
