George ‘Dennis’ Mason

George ‘Dennis’ Mason lost his battle with cancer in Oregon City, Ore., on April 22, 2018. He was 79.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, May 5, in Damascus, Ore., Pastor Kris Morris presiding. A second service is scheduled in Ridgecrest on June 9 at 2 p.m. at the Ridgecrest United Methodist Church, Pastor Wesley Elmore presiding.

Dennis was born in North Bend, Ore., July 20, 1939, to George and June (Daugherty) Mason. He was the second of five children, and his education began in a two-room school in Arago, Ore. His family moved to Gustine, Calif., in 1948 and he graduated from Gustine High School before first attending the University of California at Davis and then enlisting and serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He proudly graduated from Cal Poly University at San Luis Obispo with a degree in electrical engineering. In 1966 he began his civilian career working for the U.S. Navy at the Naval Weapons Center, China Lake. He received the Technical Director’s Award as program manager for “Cheap Night.” His final projects included developing infrared systems for the Navy’s F/A-18 fighter jet. He retired in 1996.

Dennis married Barbara Mary (Sutherlen) in 1971 in Ridgecrest, where they lived and raised their three children. Kristen, Dwight and Pamela. As a family, they worshiped at Covenant United Presbyterian Church, Grace Lutheran Church and Ridgecrest United Methodist Church. Dennis faithfully served on many church committees as well as a youth leader, Sunday school teacher, camp counselor, retreat leader and council member. He was the assistant and Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 848 and led many 50- mile hikes into the Sierra Nevada.

Each vacation would find Dennis and his family exploring the western United States and Canada in their well-traveled mini motorhome. Later he and Barbara journeyed to Alaska every summer. Dennis was an active member of the Ridgecrest Quail Unlimited, Aguabonita Flyfishers, Inyokern Trap Club and National Rifle Association. Dennis and Barbara moved back to his home state in 2013.

Dennis is survived by his wife of 46 years, Barbara of Damascus, Ore.; and their children, Dr. Kristen Mason of Medford, Ore., Dwight Mason (wife Katie) of Beavercreek, Ore., and Pamela Horan (husband Graydon) of Eagle River, Ark. His five grandchildren are William, Marie and Christopher Mason, and Liam and Daisy Horan. Two brothers, a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law survive him: Bruce Mason of Coos Bay, Ore., Donald Mason of Zebulon, N.C., Floyd Colbert of Anacortes, Wash. and Betty Leone (husband Robert) of Yucca Valley, Calif. Survivors also include many nieces and nephews, as well as his Daugherty and Shriver cousins. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Phyllis Mason and Rebecca “Becky” Colbert.

Cremation services were provided by the Crown Memorial Center of Milwaukie, Ore. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (themmrf.org), Warriors in Quiet Waters - a therapeutic fishing experience for combat wounded veterans (warriorsandquietwaters.org), or your favorite charity.
