Sherrill Virginia Odum

Sherrill Virginia OdumOur world stopped for a moment on March 8, 2018, when our beloved mother, Sherrill Virginia Odum (Farlander-Hanson-Zeigler) crossed over peacefully, surrounded by the love of family and friends, in Reno, Nev.

A celebration of Sherrill’s life will be held on April 7, noon at VFW Post 8036 in Lone Pine. Following a short memorial, we will celebrate with food and live music, which were two of her favorite things. Everyone is welcome.

Sherrill, born July 27, 1951, to David and Patricia Odum of La Puente, moved to Lone Pine as a young girl along with her mother, Patricia Farlander, and four siblings. Sherrill and her siblings grew up and attended schools in Lone Pine.

In 1967 she married Michael Hanson, and they welcomed her first child, Joanie. A few years later, with Joanie in tow, Sherrill moved to San Marcos, Redding and Santa Barbara, where she attended college. After returning to Lone Pine, Sherrill and Raymond Zeigler welcomed their two talented sons, Ray Jr. in 1976 and Ryan in 1979.

Sherrill worked in restaurants since she was young, and in the 1980s, she and her sister Shelley owned and operated the High Country Inn in Lone Pine for several years. In 1986 Sherrill and the boys moved to Bullhead City, Ariz., where she joined her lifelong friend Ellen Skinner and became a card dealer at Harrah’s Casino.

In 1995 Sherrill and Ryan moved to Ridgecrest to be closer to her daughter and grandsons. Sherrill fell ill because of complications of diabetes in 2008, and in 2009 she moved to Big Pine and later to live with her daughter Sherrill moved to Bishop, where she has resided since.

Words do not exist to describe the humor, joy and love that Sherrill brought to the world of all those who knew her, especially her children and grandchildren, whom she loved unendingly and who will move forward with broken hearts full of the love and strength that she has instilled in them.

Sherrill is survived by her sister Shelly (Danny) McMurry of Bishop; her brothers Dave (Cherie) Odum of Punta Gorda, Fla., Doug Odum of San Diego and Darrell (Janis) Odum of Independence; daughter Joanie Hanson of Bishop; sons Raymond (Peggy) Zeigler of Redlands and Ryan (Brooklynn) Zeigler of Sparks, Nev.; grandchildren Dugan and David Seymour and Alex, Ashlyn, Asher, and Adalynn Zeigler; nieces Chelsea Owens, Amber Odum, Jennifer Odum, Stephanie Odum-Brush and Robin Odum; nephews James McMurry, Doug Odum Jr., Travis Odum, Jedediah Odum and Drake Odum; and countless lifelong friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Patricia Farlander, and nephews Josh and Mo McMurry.
