Rafaela ‘Maggie’ Mercado

Rafaela (Maggie) Bermudez Mercado, 88 years young, was surrounded by family as she passed away Friday, March 9, 2018, while residing with her daughter Cathy in Murietta, Calif.

Maggie was born on Oct. 2, 1929, in Etiwanda, Calif., and lived in Ridgecrest prior to moving to Murietta.

Maggie was married to Pat Mercado from Los Angeles for 67 years, since Feb. 4, 1951. They settled in China Lake, where Pat worked at the Naval Air Weapons Station. They had four children, Danny Mercado, now of Prescott, Ariz., with four children, Matthew, Mario, Ashley and Nickolas; Mary Mercado of Montclair; David Mercado of Alhambra, living with his father; and Cathy Mercado of Murietta, with husband Kevin and children Ben and Colin.

Maggie worked as a teacher’s assistant for many years, volunteered as a Pink Lady and at St. Vincent de Paul Society, and was active in St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Ridgecrest, volunteering in the Food Pantry and for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, crocheting, long walks and traveling to Marine Corps reunions with her husband. Maggie loved being with her family and spending time with her grandchildren. She is also survived by loving sisters, Mary Bermudez and Sally (Bernard) Ancheta, brothers Joe (Rosemary), Manual (Loly), John (Leta) and Ruben Bermudez and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, Jose and Hilaria Bermudez; sister, Connie Mejia; and brothers, Joe, Frank and Tony Bermudez.

Visitation and Rosary was at Murrieta Valley Funeral Home, Wednesday, March 14. Mass service was at St. Martha’s Catholic Church on Thursday, March 15, followed by a cemetery service at Riverside National Cemetery. For more information contact the Murrieta Valley Funeral Home.
