AAUW to host nutritionist

The American Association of University Women will host clinical nutrition specialist Suzanne Ama at its Saturday, March 17, meeting at 10:30 a.m. at the Maturango Museum.

Ama is a trained nutritionist and an instructor at Cerro Coso Community College.

“There are ‘diets,’ and there is ‘nutrition,” she said. “One is sexy, and the other is not exciting but affects our real health.”

Ama will discuss how chronic diseases may be caused by vitamin or mineral deficiencies, macro nutrient imbalances or environmental toxins.

She will also discuss the emerging field of study known as nutrigenomics, which is the interaction between nutrition and genes. “Because of this added factor, the nutritional needs of each of us may differ,” she said.

The meeting is open to the public, and admission is free.
