A ceremony at the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division brought together a host of supervisors, colleagues and friends of Edwin Timmons in honor of his 45 years of service at China Lake.

“I have worked with, and still work with, some of the most talented individuals, and that has made it enjoyable to take on the many challenges that continue to come to Michelson Lab,” Timmons said.

“The saying, ‘You have to like your job to stay at it for so long,’ is true, and both have been rewarding.”

As an active-duty sailor in the Navy in 1975, Timmons served at China Lake’s Naval Air Facility in the Quality Assurance Group before being asked to set up a team of aircraft sheetmetal workers. After two and a half years at China Lake and 10 years in the Navy, Timmons made the decision to head back home to Oregon. A call from the NAWCWD Model Shop supervisor brought Timmons back.

Since working in the Applied Manufacturing Technology Division, Timmons has seen the division’s name change five times.

“The fact is, over the years the names have changed, but the extraordinarily unique and pivotal capability that we have here in that division mattered then and it matters now,” said NAWCWD Executive Director Joan Johnson as she presented Timmons with his award.

“I think part of what makes China Lake so good at what it does is that we have experts like you here.

“We have the capability, expertise and people who are completely committed and devoted to doing work organically, in-house, and that is making a difference to the warfighter.”
