Jessica De Haan was appointed to the Ridgecrest Planning Commission during the most recent city council meeting, after being nominated by Councilmember Lindsey Stephens.

De Haan will be replacing Commissioner and former Councilmember Jim Sanders, whose seat became available when he moved out of the state.

“I’ve been in this community for nearly five years and I really love it,” said De Haan, who is currently a physician’s assistant at Heatherstone Medical Clinic. “I’d just like an opportunity to serve, learn more and possibly be more involved in local government in the future.”

De Haan recently spearheaded a local movement to combat human trafficking in Kern County.

As a member of the California Army National Guard, she said there’s always a possibility of deployment taking her away from commission duties. “But as long as I’m here, I’m willing to serve,” she added.

“You have a huge job cut out for you,” said Mayor Peggy Breeden, who approved the appointment with consensus from the council.

“We thank you for that...because so many new things are coming into the community.”
