After an off-duty Ridgecrest Police Department sergeant witnessed several masked suspects trying to pry open a storage container, RPD officers arrested one adult and four juveniles suspected of grand theft on Saturday, Jan. 13.

According to an RPD press release, the off-duty officer noticed the suspect, later identified as Jose Munoz Baltierrez, 19, and the unnamed juveniles around 9 p.m. in the 600 block of China Lake Boulevard. The container was being towed by a tricycle, both of which were reportedly stolen from an 89-year-old man living in the 200 block of West Drummond Avenue.

Officers responded and the subjects attempted to flee on foot, but they were all reportedly detained in the desert near the Maturango Museum.

During the investigation, officers learned that all five individuals were allegedly present during the theft and the attempted breaking in of the container. The contents of the container were valued at $1,200, making the theft attempt a felony.

Baltierrez was found to have an active felony warrant for possession of stolen property and was booked in the Bakersfield Central Receiving Facility with bail set at $45,000. He is being charged with one count of grand theft of property. Court information is still pending.

At press time, the four juveniles were being held, pending a court hearing.
