Jerry Allen MattoxJerry Mattox, 58 passed away in Ridgecrest on Dec. 27, 2017.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, at 1 p.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church. Graveside services will follow at the Desert Memorial Park, with a reception held afterward.

Jerry was born on Sept. 1, 1959, to Howard and Vesta Mattox in Urbana, Ohio. Jerry graduated from West Liberty-Salem Hi-Point School in 1978 and moved to China Lake where his brother was stationed in the Navy. Jerry married his wife Catherine (De Rosa) Mattox on June 9, 1984.

Jerry held several jobs throughout his career, but always pursued his love for art. His interest in art began when he was a child. He began sketching, drawing, painting and exploring the different mediums such as oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastels, charcoal and pen and ink. His passion in life was art, and he loved to share it with others.

He owned and operated Mattox’s Designs Custom Screen Printing, where he printed T-shirts and hats for local businesses, bowling teams, family reunions, ball teams, schools, the D.A.R.E. Program and Relay for Life, as well as several logos for the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, including the U.S. Navy Aircraft Damage Investigator/ Technician logo.

Jerry received his Associate of Art degree from Cerro Coso Community College and continued to pursue another art degree through Cal State University Long Beach. He displayed and sold his artwork at Treasures To Cherish, the Kerr McGee Center and Ridgecrest Regional Hospital. Over the years Jerry received numerous first- and second-place awards for his paintings. He was a member of the Desert Artists’ League. He also painted petroglyph rocks for the Maturango Museum and the Indian Wells Gem and Mineral Society. Every Christmas Jerry designed a calendar for his family and friends that consisted of his latest artwork.

Jerry’s hobbies were fishing, bowling, listening to all types of music, spending time with his wife and dog and Skyping with family. He painted up until the day he passed away. Jerry also participated in the Relay for Life every year and was a member of the Escargots Team.

Jerry was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents Howard and Vesta, brothers David Earl and Paul James and sister Linda Mae (Mattox) Funk.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 33 years Catherine (De Rosa) Mattox of Ridgecrest; sister Eileen Christine (Mattox) and husband Ronald Bidwell; brother Daniel Mattox and partner Rick Hoy of Urbana, Ohio; brother Ralph and wife Chisato and family of Yokohama, Japan; sister Peggy Ann (Mattox) and husband Edward Watkins of Ridgecrest; sister Marsha Kay (Mattox/Crane) and husband Richard Sandrowicz of Jacksonville, Fla.; parents-In-Law John Jr. and Frances De Rosa; brother-in-law John De Rosa III of Ridgecrest; brother-in-law Joseph De Rosa and spouse Bonnie of Bakersfield; andsister-in-law Frances (De Rosa) and spouse Bob Pegler of Village of Lakewood, Ill. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and his dog “Lucky.”

Jerry was a gentle, kind and loving man. He will be sadly missed but always in our hearts.

The viewing will be held Friday, Jan. 19, from 5-8 p.m. at the H.K. Holland Memorial Chapel.
