Mary Childers

Mary Jeane Cragin Childers, longtime resident, slipped away peacefully Dec. 11, 2017, at her home in Ridgecrest. She was 91.

Mary arrived in the valley in 1962. She started work in the valley for the Kern County Sheriff’s Department as a secretary and female prisoner transport matron. After the incorporation of Ridgecrest as a city, Mary went to work for the first Ridgecrest Police Department as a secretary/matron. Mary eventually joined the Naval Weapons Center, forerunner of the Naval Air Warfare Center. She initially started her career as a secretary at SNORT and the Ground Ranges. She later moved on to a financial position in Cost Accounting and finished her career in Plant Property.

Mary spent many years roaming the deserts with her husband, Patrick, collecting rocks for their involvement in the Indian Wells Valley Gem & Mineral Society. She always found the prettiest rocks in the shortest distance from the vehicle. Mary shared her many interests and talents with her family, passing on her skills of sewing, cooking and needlework and especially her love of music of all kinds. Mary had a passion for family genealogy and compiled a massive amount of information.

Mary is survived by her husband of 38 years, Patrick; daughter Susan Prazak; son Marvin M. and Lynn Cragin; sister-in-law,Pam Childers; brothers-in-law Mike and Marsha Childers and Joe Childers; nieces Jill Butler, Cammie Clarke, Cassie Polley, Patti Schwartz and Shelby Childers; and nephews Joe and Amy Childers, Mike and Jessica Childers; and grand- and great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Albert M. and Sarah E. King; and brothers, Glenn and Jack King.
