To the Editor: Lions discontinue fireworks show

For 23 years the Ridgecrest Lions have dedicated untold hours of time and talent to fundraising, coordinating and hosting the annual Fourth of July Community Fireworks Show. This year, however, most of our members will attend the Lions International Convention in Las Vegas during the Fourth of July week, and we simply cannot be in two places at once.

The combination of declining donations, rising costs and lack of volunteers and club members to raise funds, coordinate and host the event, have led the Lions to decide, with heartfelt regret, that we can no longer put on the Community Fireworks Show. The time has come for another group to take the helm in putting on the Community Fireworks Show for 2018 and beyond.

The Ridgecrest Lions believe it is important to promote patriotism in our community. To that end, we remain ready, willing, and able to share our expertise with any group that steps up to fundraise, coordinate and host the event. Our small group of Ridgecrest Lions has decided to rededicate itself to charitable community projects aligned with the larger vision of Lions International. We thereby hope to increase interest of community members in joining the Ridgecrest Lions Club.

In addition to serving locally, Lions throughout the world support six global service areas: vision and hearing, hunger, youth, the environment, pediatric cancer; and diabetes. The vision of Lions Clubs International is to be the global leader in community and humanitarian service. By placing our focus on these six areas, the Ridgecrest Lions Club hopes to become better known in our community, to gain new members, and build on our proud seventy year history of service to the Ridgecrest community

Our club fondly looks back on our 23 years spent leading the Community Fireworks Show, and we now look forward to our continued work within the Ridgecrest community and beyond. Consider how your group or organization might help keep the Community Fireworks Show going and act accordingly. Please contact the Desert Empire Fairgrounds with your offer of support.
