Aida Byrd

Aida ByrdAida Byrd, a 50-year Ridgecrest resident, passed away Thursday, Nov. 23, in Santa Clarita at the age of 79.

Born in 1938 to Frank and Mary Ramos in Los Angeles, Aida graduated from Lincoln High School in Los Angeles.

In January 1959 Aida met Lawrence Byrd, and they married in August 1959. Their 58-year marriage included stops in Alaska and San Jose before settling in Ridgecrest in 1967.

Along with her husband, Aida is survived by daughters Teri Bachman (Tim), Laurie Wagner (Ralph), Roberta and Darlene McGonagle (Mike); and sons Larry, Joe (Kathy), Andrew (Deonne) and Gene. Aida had 20 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She is also survived by siblings John, Maryann and Tina. She was preceded in death by brothers Frank and Tony.

Aida’s community activities included more than 10 years teaching CCD at All Faith Chapel and volunteering with IWV Little League, Youth Football and Burros Boosters. She was also a Brownie Troop leader. She received an Outstanding Service Award from the Sierra Sands PTA in 1985.

She worked many years at Sierra Sands Unified School District as a teacher’s aide and at Homemaker Service of IWV. After retiring she continued to volunteer, driving seniors to out-of- town appointments.

She kept track of life’s events in annual calendars, keeping in touch with loved ones, acknowledging hundreds of birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, graduations and births with cards. Her annual Christmas card list eventually grew to more than 100.

Services will be on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 11 a.m. in St. Ann’s Catholic Church.
