Nearly 200 racers from all over California – and a handful from as far as Utah – turned out last weekend for the sixth annual Desert Classic bicycle race, sponsored by High Sierra Cyclists. Local clubs were well represented with several first-place finishers across 10 categories accounting for age, experience and course distance.

Finishing first for men and women in the 27-mile Pro course were Bear Valley Bikes/Honey Stinger’s Stuart Gonzalez of Riverside and Bear Valley Bikes’s Amanda Felder of Del Mar.

First place for the 27-mile Expert course – Logan Race Club’s Mason Parkinson of Providence, Utah (men, under 20); HSC’s William Pease (men, 20-39), HSC’s Colby Begin (men, 40-49), HSC’s Doug Philbrick (men, 50+) and Genevieve Plum of Bishop (women, all).

With a race time of 2:00:26, Begin placed first in every age bracket for the Expert Division and came in ahead of all but two Pro Division racers.

For the 21-mile Sport course – Logan Rex of Palmdale (men, under 30), Team Action Dad, Factory Cycles’s Ryan Abler of Bakersfield (men, 30-39), Red Zone Racing’s Steve Bohanan of Corona (men, 40-49), Ray Cruz of Palmdale (men, 50+) and HSC’s Melissa Parkinson (women, all).

For the 18-mile Beginner course – Zachary Akin of Palmdale (men, under 20), Sean Malone of Ridgecrest (men, 20-29), Clydesdales United!’s Brett Tanner of Ridgecrest (men, 30-49), Aaron Duff of Ridgecrest (men, 50+), Amanda Young of Ridgecrest (women, under 40), Shaleen Lambert of Ridgecrest (women, 40-49) and Sondra Gassie of Temecula (women, 50+).

And for the eight-mile “Classic Loop” – Erik Wicker of Ridgecrest (men, under 60), G. Win Const, Inc.’s Greg Winters of Ridgecrest (men, 60+), Allison Smithpeters of Porterville (women, under 40), HSC’s Lisa Couch (women, 40+) and HSC’s Rebecca and Tom Kunkel in the tandem category.

“We had one of the largest turnouts to date,” said HSC racer Adam Curry. “The race was a ton of fun and we were given perfect weather for it.”
