Last Friday night the Burroughs Burros took on the Saints of St. Anthony High School at home in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 9 bracket. The Burros, coming off a blowout game over Rubidoux High School, carried that momentum forward to beat St. Anthony 32-7.

The game started off with a rather slow offensive start for both teams. St. Anthony started the game with the ball, but quickly gave it over to the Burros on a three-and-out. The Burros returned the favor and gave the ball back to the Saints after a fumble on fourth down.

After a slow back and forth first quarter, the Burros finally got points on the board with a 28-yard field goal by senior Ryan Arlow.

The Saints would take over with 10:45 remaining in the first half. The Saints couldn’t get anything going and had to punt, after a big sack by Senior Wyatt Soto. The Burros took over on their own 30-yard line with 7:50 remaining in the half.

With the game a defensive battle again, a three-and-out was forced, and the Saints took the ball on their own 47-yard line.

After another series of punts by both teams, the Burros finally got the offense to warm up with a 25-yard pass from senior Austin Griffin to junior Bryson Pippin on a 3rd and 9.

The Burros had a first down with the ball on their own 25-yard line with 1:33 remaining in the first half. Sophomore Jalen Beecroft made a catch on the 7-yard line running out of bounds, with 40 seconds left in the half.

The Burros finally crossed the goal line, with a 7-yard quarterback draw by Griffin putting six more on the scoreboard. The Burros were ahead 9-0 going into halftime after the PAT attempt by senior Mya Morales was blocked.

The Burros started the second half off, but quickly turned it over to the Saints on an interception. The Saints drove the ball downfield and attempted a field goal, but it fell short in turn, giving the Burros the ball at their own 20-yard line, with 10:02 remaining in the third quarter.

A big run on third and 17 by senior Antonio Ramirez put the Burros nearly at midfield with nine minutes left in the third quarter. After a brutal pass interference by the Saints, the Burros had a first and 10 at the Saints’ 14-yard line.

The Burros extended their lead with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Pippin followed by a two point conversion pass to senior Jack Sherritt making the score 17-0 with 6:25 remaining in the third.

Griffin again connected with Pippin on a 20-plus-yard touchdown pass, followed by a Morales PAT to make the score 24-0 Burros with 3:08 left in the third.

The Burros got the ball back with two minutes left in the third, with an interception by Senior Michael Hardwick.

The Burros started the fourth quarter off with three points off an Arlow field goal, making the score 27-0. The Burros kicking squad continued to put up points with a 25-plus-yard field goal by Morales, making the score 30-0 with 8:02 remaining in the game. The Saints finally put points on the board with a 74-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, Burros leading 30-7.

The Burros set the Saints up deep in Saint territory on the seven- yard line, after a punt by Griffin which led to a safety by Soto and Sherritt for two more points for the Burros with 1:09 left in the game. The game ended with three kneels by Griffin out of the victory formation with a final score of 32-7 Burros.

“Our defense is awesome,” said Head Coach Todd Mather. “They are a special group of kids who prepare very well and let things fall into place for us.

“It’s just a great season that is continuing on.”

The Burros’ season will continue this Friday against the Mayfair High School Monsoons at Mayfair in the CIF Southern Section D9 Semi-Final game. Kickoff will take place at 7 p.m. so make the drive to go and support your Burros, who haven’t been in a semi-final game since 2005.
