In the Audience: Bogie and Bacall in the spotlight

By NICK ROGERS

“Bogie and Bacall,” as the current Historical Society of the Upper Mojave Desert’s Classic Movie Night series is appropriately called, has featured the collaboration of the glittering screen icons, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, in four popular classic films in which the duo made the movie screen ignite. The crowds for these cinematic classics at the Historic USO Building were sizable, indeed!

The last two films of the series (to screen on Wednesdays, Oct. 18 and Nov. 1) feature Bogart without Bacall, and…vice versa! Bogart finally receives a well-deserved Best Actor Academy Award® for his bravura 1951 performance opposite the legendary Katharine Hepburn in the John Huston-directed tale of a rough-and-ready steamer captain and a prim missionary who navigate raging rapids, among many other setbacks, to defeat a World War I gunboat in hot pursuit.

Bacall takes the final bow in a delightful 1957 comedy, directed by the legendary Vincente Minnelli, opposite an unexpectedly funny Gregory Peck as an oil-and-water couple who fall in love, marry and unwittingly share each other’s crazy misadventures. This one is a sure bet to tickle funny bones!

And get ready for holiday cheer beginning in November. Four seasonal film hits from the legendary Metro-Goldwyn Mayer Studios come your way to make things merry and bright! Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland, June Alyson, Peter Lawford, Janet Leigh, Margaret O’Brien, Elizabeth Taylor, Ray Bolger and Billie Burke are among the roster of studio stars who will delight movie goers during the holidays in our latest series “An M.G.M. Merry Christmas.” And, don’t forget the encore showing of that classic that will take us all down the Yellow Brick Road on Wednesday, Dec. 27!

All films screen at 7 p.m. on flex Wednesdays at the Historic USO Building, 230 W. Ridgecrest Blvd. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for guests to purchase the many taste-tempting treats offered at snack bar. Admission is, as always, free, but donations are gratefully accepted. For film titles, call 760-375-8456 or stop by for a film schedule available in the lobby.

As always … See you at the movies!
