Emergency service personnel, including Kern County Fire Department Stations 74 and 77, responded to reports of a grass fire in the 400 block of East Ridgecrest Boulevard around noon on Aug. 27. Despite a quick firefighting attack, the fire destroyed one mobile home and damaged the one next to it. However, firefighters were able to rescue eight cats from the structure and three dogs from the yard. Officials administered oxygen until Ridgecrest Animal Control arrived on scene. All animals are reportedly in good condition. The cause of the fire was reported as accidental. The blaze caused an estimated $30,000 in damages, but firefighters were able to save about $10,000 from damage. -- Photo by Laura Austin
