Gary Parsons is stepping down from his role as the city’s economic development manager. Beginning Sept. 15, Phenvana “Pen” Panpradith will take over as head of the Economic Development, Planning and Building departments and the Planning Commission.

Panpradith comes to us from Coachella, where she was assistant to the city manager.

“She’ll be working with Gary for the next few weeks,” said Acting City Manager Ron Strand. “We’re sitting down and talking about our economic development direction. It’s going to take her a little bit to get on her feet – with the variety of responsibilities. But I think she’ll do well.”

According to Strand, Parsons plans on retiring after he steps away. The Economic Development Office was not available for further comment at press time.

Strand also announced that the city would be hiring an associate planner in September. He said the individual’s name would be released at a later date.

The city also held a public hearing on Wednesday night to gather input from the public while hunting for a new city manger.

The next meeting of the Ridgecrest City Council is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 6, at 6 p.m. in City Council Chambers. (See related story, this page).
