The Ridgecrest City Council voted unanimously on Wednesday to name Police Chief Ron Strand as interim city manager, effective July 1. Strand will fill the role for nine months or until a permanent replacement is found.

In March current City Manager Dennis Speer announced his plan to retire within the year. When Strand takes over, Speer plans to focus full time on his other position as public works director.

Capt. Jed McLaughlin will take over as acting police chief during this period, according to Strand.

The council also established a standing Finance Committee and continued a discussion on the allocation of some $1.4 million in tax allocation bond funds.

Council approved $180,000 to renovate the Senior Center parking lot and roughly $600,000 (under protest) for the replocation of an SCE power pole on South Downs Street. The remaining funds will allow for researching for slurry seal and microsurfacing equipment for our streets. See next weeks edition for more details.
