Helen M. Cleary

Helen M. ClearyHelen M. Cleary, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother and friend was taken into the realms of glory on May 30, 2017.

She was born in Elizabeth City, N.C., Sept. 29, 1918. She was a retired bookkeeper. She came to Ridgecrest in March of 1999 to live with her daughter and husband, Janice & John Schorr after losing her eyesight to macular degeneration.

She was a constant prayer warrior for the Ridgecrest Church of the Nazarene and touched many lives there. In October 2014, she was not able to walk anymore and spent her time praying for everyone she could on a daily basis and listening to the Bible on CDs as well as audio books. She also served in ministry for 43 years at the Parkway Christian Center in Chesapeake, VA as a Sunday school teacher and in other areas of the church. While in Yokohama, Japan from 1953-1956 she was active in the All Faith Chapel and taught English to many Japanese students.

She is survived by her daughter, Janice Schorr (John); grandson, Kenneth W. Reed (Kim) and great-granddaughter Elyse & great-great grandson, Joel Reed and great-great-granddaughter, Janet “Ellie” Davalos; grandson Michael S. Reed (great-granddaughter Amber); grandson, Brian Schorr (Heidi), great-great granddaughter Dr. Bobbie Jean Schorr & great-great grandson, Johnny Schorr & family; granddaughter, Connie (Gary) Conway & great-great granddaughter, Michele & family, great-great grandsons Michael & Joe Dewhurst and families; great-great granddaughter Sara Berry & family, great-great granddaughter Jamie Schorr & family; great-great grandson Steven Adams & family & great-great grandson Cody Bailey.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce F. Cleary, Mother, Hattie Mae Owney Copeland, Father, William Binford Copeland, sisters, Elizabeth Germy and Juanita Husted; grandson, Randy Curtis Schorr & great-great grandson, Randy Schorr Jr.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Church of the Nazarene (Children’s Playground).

Services were held June 3 at the Church of the Nazarene with Rev. James L. Goss, Rev. Timothy C. Smith & Rev. Greggory B. Griffin officiating. Arrangements are being made through Holland & Lyons and Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home in Norfolk, Va.

She was laid to rest at Riverside Memorial Park in Norfolk.
