Forest roads slow to open

SEQUOIA NATIONAL FOREST — The summer season is upon us in the Giant Sequoia National Monument and Sequoia National Forest. Many of the roads accessing popular trailheads and high mountain vistas are still closed due to hazards. Forest personnel are busy removing these hazards as equipment and time allow.

Roads have been washed away due to the heavy precipitation we experienced over the winter months. The numerous dead trees that fell on roadways need to be cut up and moved out of the way. Heavy equipment required to remove large boulders which are blocking roads, is not readily available.

“We appreciate the visitors’ understanding as we try to reopen the roads into these treasured places,” stated Forest Supervisor Kevin Elliott. “Your safety is important, thank you for your patience.”
