A comment made a year ago by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy that President Donald Trump could be on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s payroll created a firestorm this week in the media.

According to reports, McCarthy was speaking with House Speaker Paul Ryan and other Republicans about Trump’s defense of the Russian leader. “There’s two people I think Putin pays: [California Congressman Dana] Rohrabacher and Trump,” McCarthy was quoted as saying.

Ryan reportedly cut off the conversation and directed those present not to repeat the remarks.

Since Trump’s election, Mc-Carthy has been identified as one of the closest advisors to the president.

When the Washington Post broke the story, McCarthy responded via Twitter with “This was an attempt at humor gone wrong. No surprise @WashingtonPost tried to contort this into breaking news.”
