Officers of the California Highway Patrol, Mojave station responded to a single-vehicle accident on Highway 14 on the morning of May 10, that claimed the life of Ridgecrest resident James L. Howard, 67.

According to the CHP release, Howard was headed south through Red Rock Canyon where he collided with the west-shoulder guardrail and overturned into a ditch.

He was not wearing his safety belt and was fatally injured during the collision.

The cause is still under investigation, CHP Public Information Officer Darlena Dotson said. “It’s looking like it was a matter of his speed and an unsafe turning movement.

“But there’s not definitive cause yet,” she added. “I know the officers are still working on it.”

CHP reminds motorists to always wear their seat belts.
