An alleged dispute between a husband and wife escalated to violence on Saturday, leaving a 35-year-old Ridgecrest man dead.

According to a report from the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, Ridgecrest Police Department officers responded to a call at Cameo Kennels on the 1500 block of South Nolan Street at approximately 4:54 p.m.

Upon arrival, they learned that a man had suffered a gunshot wound and had been transported by a private party to Ridgecrest Regional Hospital.

Further investigation revealed that Michael William Davis, the victim of the shooting, arrived at Cameo Kennels, where his wife is employed. The two reportedly began arguing. Kennel owner Philip Norwood, 67, allegedly asked Davis to leave. When Davis refused to comply, Norwood reportedly shot him. Authorities report that Norwood then drove Davis to RRH, where he was pronounced dead.

Officers from RPD and KCSO reportedly left the crime scene in search of Norwood. When they arrived at his home, they found no sign that either he or his wife was at home. While detectives and deputies were still on the scene, Norwood arrived in his vehicle.

Norwood was reportedly taken into custody without incident. In a further search of the home, authorities recovered a loaded handgun.

As a result of the investigation, Norwood is being charged with one count of 1st-degree murder.

The suspect has been booked into the Central Receiving Facility. Original reports from KCSO indicate he was being held without bail, but current court records cite his bail as $1 million.

Norwood’s arraignment hearing was held May 9. His next hearing is scheduled for Monday, May 15, at 3 p.m. in Bakersfield’s Metro Division courthouse.

In 2003 Norwood was sentenced to 30 days in jail for charges relating to assault with a deadly weapon (other than firearm) with great bodily injury, vandalism and threatening with intent to terrorize. He was released on good behavior after four days served.
