Groundwater Authority to hold public workshop

The Indian Wells Valley Groundwater Authority will hold a public workshop next Wednesday, April 26, 5:30 p.m. at SpringHill Suites. The main topic of discussion will be Article 5 of the board’s bylaws, pertaining to stakeholder participation in groundwater sustainability efforts through Policy Advisory and Technical Advisory Committees.

The meeting announcement followed shortly after the cancelation of what would have been Thursday’s regular meeting of the IWVGA board — presumably because of a discussion during the IWV Water District meeting earlier this month.

During its meeting, the IWVWD board requested that a letter be sent to the groundwater authority stating that the directors would not support any further approval of the bylaws until the workshop was held.

For months, valley pumpers have pleaded with the IWVGA for meaningful participation in the board’s activities. Critics of the committees’ draft bylaws’ section have pointed to its wavering inclusion and exclusion of named entities such as Meadowbrook Farms and Searles Valley Minerals as well as its “adversarial” language in regard to the board’s authority to remove committee members at its discretion.
