Joseph Emory ONeal Newton
Joseph Emory ONeal Newton, M.D. age 89, died peacefully on April 1, 2017, in his home after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He is survived by his husband Robert, his daughter Martha, his sister Marthann, five grandchildren, four-great grandchildren, his stepchildren, step- grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his brother Julian I. Newton II, wife Elizabeth J. Newton, son David E. Newton and stepdaughter Loretta C. Schweitzer.
He received his degree from Georgia Tech and obtained his medical degree from Emory University with a medical internship at Johns Hopkins. A respected psychiatrist, Joe is a veteran of World War II and Korea who dedicated his life to counseling veterans.
Joe was an accomplished composer, and some of his music was performed for a live audience in his Ridgecrest retirement home in 2011.
Ever interested in other cultures, he was avid traveler, visiting many countries as well as traveling via RV to most of the 50 states. He cherished his road trips.
Once his illness took his livelihood, he was cared for by Bob’s family in their home. A private service will be held by the family.
In remembrance of Joe, donations can be made to Johns Hopkins or Emory University in his name.
