RRH presents dodgeball tourney

Along with the health screenings, physician introductions and wellness resources that are traditionally offered at the Ridgecrest Regional Hospital’s annual Health Fair, teen and adult teams are invited to sign up for the inaugural Dodgeball Tournament, to be held Saturday, March 11, in conjunction with the fair.
Tera Moorehead, director of community outreach for RRH, said she had seen similar events in other cities.
“I’m always trying to think of new things to help our community be healthier and more active,” she said. “I thought this would be a fun way for people to get out and get moving.”
Moorehead began promoting the event on social media, where it has taken on a life of its own.
“People really seem to love the idea — which is great,” she said. “But so far, there are not a whole lot of people who have signed up.”
The tournament will feature divisions for adults and teens (ages 14-17). Each team must have six people, with at least two from each gender. Alternate players are allowed to sign up, but teams can have only six people on the court at one time.
Teams must have completed registration — including the $100 entry fee, and waivers signed by each member — by March 1. On the day of the tournament, signups will be held at 8 a.m. After a rules refresher, tournament play will start in a double-elimination format.
“Depending on how many teams we have from each division, we will probably have one adult round, then a teen round, and so on,” said Moorehead.
RRH has partnered with High Desert Fitness, whose staff is helping coordinate and run the event.
Moorehead said she believes that encouraging people of all ages to stay active is an important part of wellness.
“Providing fun interactions for the community, and giving youth something fun to do, is crucial. I think the Dodgeball tournament does all this,” she said.
She said she is particularly eager to see more teen teams join the fun.
