Loraine L. Bittel

Loraine L. BittelLoraine Luse Lightsey Bittel, a former resident of Ridgecrest, died Jan. 2, 2017. She was 98.

Loraine was born March 31, 1918, in Leming, Texas, to Cornelius and Gertrude Nations Lightsey. After graduation from high school in Charlotte, Texas, in 1938, and from the Memorial School of Nursing in Houston, Texas, in 1941, Loraine joined the Army Nurses Corps.

While stationed at Fort Sill, Okla., she met her husband-to-be, Art Bittel. They married in San Antonio, Texas, on Jan. 26, 1946. After living in Fort Bragg, N.C.; Lansing, Mich.; and Salem, Ore.; they settled in Ridgecrest.

When Art retired in 1975, they moved to Florence, Ore., and later to Tucson, Ariz., in 2000.

Loraine lost her beloved husband in July 2008 after 62 years of marriage. Loraine was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She accepted Christ as her savior at an early age and remained a strong and dedicated Christian her entire life.

She is survived by her sons, Alan (Sandi), David (Rose Ann), Sidney and Jeffrey (Sheri); seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sisters Hazel Alexander and Helen Kaulfus of San Antonio.

Interment was at National Memorial Cemetery of Phoenix, Ariz.
