Longtime resident Jacqueline Yvonne Dahloff Haff Bumgardner passed away Jan. 11, 2017, after a brief illness.
Jackie was born in 1941. her father was a captain in the US Navy and Jackie spent her youth moving from station to station throughout the U.S. and Europe. Jackie settled in Northern California and earned her bachelor’s degree in political science in 1963.
Continuing the navy theme Jackie married Capt. William B. Haff, and they moved to China Lake when he took over command of the base. They had one child, Rob.
Jackie was always athletic. She was an accomplished downhill skier and considered turning pro. She, her husband and son water skied together. In fact, they bought a cabin on the lake in Bridgeport so they could ski right outside the door. Jackie was also a very good tennis player and ran marathons.
After the dissolution of her first marriage Jackie married Jim Bumgardner and they started Fire Mountain Arabians (horses) in Ridgecrest. Jackie discovered endurance riding, and all other sports fell away. In fact, Jim and Jackie taught a course about endurance riding at Cerro Coso Community College.
Jackie became an endurance riding icon. She amassed more than 30,000 riding miles, completing her last 65-mile ride at the age of 69. She completed the world famous Tevis Cup, a 100-mile race, four times. She started four endurance rides and managed them for 30 years. All the rides continue to this day under new managers.
Jackie had prodigious energy. In 1980 she started, along with Tom Senn, the Creation of You health spa. There she spent five years bringing good health and fitness to the women of Ridgecrest and some of the men!
Jackie taught French and German at Cerro Coso. She also taught tennis and finagled her way into teaching a class on skiing, taking all the students to Mammoth to ski. Jackie also taught at Burroughs High School, earning her permanent teaching status in 1987.
Jackie is survived by her three siblings Richard, Steve and Diane; also by her son Robb Haff and her beloved grandchildren Avery and Brady all of Spokane Wash.
