Two opportunities for young musicians


The Desert Community Orchestra Association announced that applications for the Peter Pinto Memorial Music Scholarship are now available.

The scholarship is available for high school graduates (as of June 2017) who are younger than 22 and plan to continue their musical education.

Applications are due March 1. Auditions and interviews will be conducted March 13 from 5-7:30 p.m. at Ridgecrest Presbyterian Church.

Dr. Pinto was a pediatrician at the Drummond Medical Clinic for many years and a long-time member and supporter of the orchestra.

Applications are available from the Burroughs High School band, orchestra, choir and scholarship office, Cerro Coso financial aid office, Mesquite High School office, Immanuel Christian School office or through the High Desert Music Teachers Association members.

The Desert Community Orchestra Association announced its annual Young Artists competition, which offers student musicians an opportunity to perform as guest soloists at the orchestra’s spring concert on April 29.

Vocal and instrumental musicians age 22 and younger are invited to submit applications by Feb. 9. Auditions will be held in the morning of Feb. 25. Musicians should select significant works by recognized composers than can be performed with the orchestra.

Instrumentalists should choose music in concerto form and vocalists should choose works from a major choral or operatic work.
