Burke named new chancellor of KCCD

The Kern Community College District Board of Trustees, which oversees Cerro Coso Community College along with two other institutions in the county, has named Thomas J. Burke as its new chancellor. He will assume his new role on Jan. 17.

According to KCCD Trustee Mark Storch of Ridgecrest, the board chose Burke after launching a nationwide search for a new executive.

“I have every confidence in Mr. Burke’s ability to be the chancellor,” he said.

Burke has served as KCCD chief financial officer since 2001.

He holds a master’s degree in business administration from California State University Bakersfield and a bachelor of science degree in business administration with an emphasis in finance from California Polytechnic University San Luis Obispo.

Burke was the trustees’ unanimous choice to replace Sandra V. Serrano, who is retiring after 13 years as chancellor.

Burke will be responsible for a district that encompasses nearly 25,000 square miles and serves more than 40,000 students in Bakersfield, Porterville and Ridgecrest as well as satellite programs in Delano, Arvin, Tehachapi, California City, Lake Isabella, Bishop and Mammoth Lakes.
