Manson in Bakersfield hospital

The local region is once again sharing a link with infamous cult-leader Charles Manson, whose role in a string of grisly murders — and countercultural teachers — has kept him in the headlines for decades since his imprisonment.

The 82-year-old inmate of Corcoran State Prison, located in Kings County, was transported to Mercy Hospital in Bakersfield on Sunday for what was later reported as gastrointestinal bleeding.

Very little information has been released about his condition, other than unofficial comments that he is “seriously ill” and that there is no clear indication when his medical treatment will end.

This marks the second time Manson has been connected to the region. He and his followers were arrested in 1969 at Barker Ranch in Panamint Valley, located just north of Trona.

The cabin at the isolated ranch burned down in 2009, although the location reportedly remains a tourist attraction to this day.
