Astronomy program, star party in August

Star GazingThe next meeting of the China Lake Astronomical Society will be held Monday, Aug. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Maturango Museum.

The next star party will be held Friday, Aug. 14. Signs will be out at 8 a.m. with viewing at 8:30 a.m. Calendars and handbooks will be available.

August Celestial Calendar:

1. Mercury stays low in the west for the month of August.

2. Venus and Jupiter remain in the evening sky where they remain close the first half of the month before moving in the sun’s glare by the end of the month. Look for them in the west after sunset.

3. Saturn is also in the evening sky near the head of Scorpius. Look for it in the southwest after sunset.

4. The Perseid meteor shower peaks on the night of Aug. 12-13, just one day before the new moon, so the viewing will be excellent.
