To the Editor: Scanlons add to museum collection
A beautiful story started when Jake and Sheryl Scanlon of Ridgecrest surprised me with a unique gift — an exceptional self-edited book and a DVD with pictures, which tells the adventurous story of a Mojave ground squirrel family with five members settling in the Scanlons’ back yard between the years 2011-2013.
The Scanlons managed to capture extraordinary moments from the life of these delicate, curious, playful and funny critters. It’s important to mention that the ground squirrel is considered an endangered species in California. The remarkable thing is that the Scanlons took a lot of care in taking such amazing photos of these little entertainers without interfering with or disturbing their life cycle.
Thank you, Scanlon family, for your dedication, patience and perseverance to create a unique publication, which is now part of the Maturango Museum’s library collection!
The book will be a delight for visitor public of all ages participating in the “ Behind the Scenes” tour I conduct each Thursday from 2:30-5 p.m. The tours are free for children up to 18 years old and cost $5 per adult. Call me at 760-264-6522 to schedule a tour.
