Astronomy Column: Star party held next month


The next meeting of the China Lake Astronomical Society will be held July 7 at 7:30 p.m. in the Maturango Museum. A star party will be held July 25, with viewing beginning at 9 p.m.

July Celestial Calendar:

1. Venus remains in the morning sky this month. Look for the brilliant planet in the east before sunrise.

2. Jupiter appears in the evening sky for only the first few days of the month. Look for it low in the west very early in the month before it moves behind the sun.

3. Mercury moves to the morning sky where it will be visible in the east-northeast during the middle of the month. On July 15 Mercury will appear just 7 degrees to the lower left of Venus.

4. Saturn is still in Virgo. Look for it in the south after sundown and the southwest after midnight.

5. Mars remains in Virgo all month but it is heading toward Saturn to its east all month. Look for Mars in the southwest after sunset.

6. The minor Delta Aquariid shower peaks on July 30.
