Rescue team seeks missing climber

Search parties are looking for John Likely of New Jersey, a Mt. Whitney climber who went missing near Mirror Lake Sunday. According to Sheila Rockwell of the China Lake Mountain Rescue Group, the climber had fallen behind and did not meet up with the rest of his group at their designated meeting place.

“The group notified [authorities] immediately, which was good” said Rockwell. A group of CLMRG members headed by Mike Myers searched for Likely Sunday evening and all day Monday. CLMRG has enlisted the help of more search and rescue personnel from the L.A. and San Bernardino areas while the orignal teams take a leave of rest Tuesday. If Likely is not found, Myers and crew will continue their search today.

CLMRG trains volunteers year-round in mountain search and rescue missions. In case of emergencies the USDA Forest Service recommends that hikers leave detailed travel plans with someone they trust to initiate a rescue. If you become lost, it’s always best to stay in one place and attempt to make yourself as visible as possible. For more wilderness safety info visit fs.usda.gov/detail/inyo/recreation/hiking.
