A stolen vehicle report was filed with the Ridgecrest Police Depart-ment on Jan. 31 at 8:08 a.m. Officers went to the residence in the 700 block of West Sydnor Avenue, where the alleged victims said that their 2012 Mitsubishi Eclipse had been stolen between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. After an extensive area check was conducted, the vehicle was not found.
The following day at around 6:15 a.m., Officer Shane Joseph was patrolling the neighborhoods near the area where the vehicle had been reported stolen. He observed a male subject, later identified as Jonathan Stanley-Ratto, 21, walking in the 1200 block of North Downs Street.
Officer Joseph attempted to speak with Stanley-Ratto, who attempted to flee on foot. A struggle ensued before the officer handcuffed and arrested Stanley-Ratto. In the suspect’s possession were women’s sunglasses, jewelry, Dodge keys and a large amount of loose change.
Officials confirmed that Stanley-Ratto had been walking around several northwest Ridgecrest neighborhoods, breaking into vehicles (primarily unlocked vehicles) and taking property.
Some victims were located and their property returned.
After Stanley-Ratto’s arrest, he led officers to the 1800 block of West Burns Avenue. Officers found the stolen Mitsubishi, which was hidden inside a garage on abandoned property. The owner of the vehicle was notified, and the vehicle was returned.
Stanley-Ratto was booked at the Kern County Jail on charges of vehicle theft, parole hold, resisting an officer, possession of stolen property, tampering with a vehicle and possession of burglary tools.
The Ridgecrest Police Depart-ment asks that you secure your vehicle and not leave your keys anywhere inside of the vehicle. Also, please do not leave valuables in view, as this makes you and your vehicle a target for thieves.Story First Published: 2014-02-05
