From the State Capitol: Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.By Assemblywoman Shannon Grove

Let us take time, as we commemorate this important day, to renew our commitment to the freedom and opportunity that are the bedrock of this great nation. In his famed speech given during the March on Washington, D.C., Reverend King proclaimed that when “the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence,” those documents were a “promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.”

Dr. King took the historic assertions of our founding fathers, their conviction that all of us are endowed by our Creator with unalienable rights, and he championed this cause for equality.

Dr. King’s fight is not over, but we can honor his legacy by standing together as a community and ensuring that America’s best days still lie ahead.

Shannon Grove represents the Kern County communities of Bakersfield, Ridgecrest, Tehachapi, Taft and Frazier Park/Lebec.
