Off the Shelf: What’s new at Kern County Library

By Marsha Lloyd

Ridgecrest Branch Librarian

Coming soon to the Ridgecrest Branch Library is self check-out of library materials. Libraries in the Bakersfield area are currently having self check-out hardware and software installed. Within the next couple of months we expect that our technology staffers from Bakersfield will be here to update our circulation desk to the new systems. There will be a learning curve for both the staff and then the public. We hope that by the time this change comes to this branch most of the “bugs” will have been smoothed out.

If you are a student with a science fair project assignment, stop by the library for lots of books of project ideas and plans. Don’t wait until the last minute on this one! It takes seven to 10 days to get books in from another library if we don’t have what you need on our shelves. Students are encouraged to try the many moderated online databases for background on their projects. Kern County Library subscribes to many of the EBSCOHost databases for access to authoritative, peer-reviewed information.

Go to Kern County Library’s website and click on “Research & Reference.” (A current Kern County Library card is required for access to the databases outside the library, and cards are issued free with the appropriate identification.)

January brings the beginning of income tax season. Federal income tax booklets and forms will be delayed again this season. We expect to have handouts of the standard booklets and forms by late January. The IRS website has current information too at www.irs.gov.

Preschool Storytime is held on Fridays at 9:30 a.m. in the library conference room. Children ages three to five enjoy our talented presenters and discover the joy to be found in books.

Please contact the Ridgecrest Branch Library at 760-384-5870 for more information on these or other programs and services. The library’s hours are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 11 a.m.-7 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays 9 a.m.-5 p.m. You may also visit the Kern County Library’s website at www.kerncountylibrary.org to check on your account, search the online catalog, place holds, access many subscription electronic databases and much more any time. Check it out!
