Letter: Shares memories of Aulds
To the Editor:
As a member of the Ridgecrest Optimist Club, I would like to thank Howard and Barbara Auld for the steadfast support of our community. Howard’s passing was a sad event for the Ridgecrest Optimist Club. Howard had 48 years in Optimism, supporting the community of Ridgecrest during his entire tenure with Optimist Clubs.
When starting the Ridgecrest Optimist Club, we found a wealth of wisdom in Howard and Barbara, and I relished the time that the board spent with the Aulds while building the current club. Howard and Barbara took time to meet with the board for a private luncheon to help us understand the successes of the past club, the Optimist Club of Ridgecrest and China Lake and tell us how to create successful fundraisers.
My most notable memory of Howard was while working as the secretary of a local board for another organization. The board was dealing with an issue that was controversial at the time, and Howard remained silent through the entire discussion until the end. And when Howard spoke his feelings on the issue the room went silent, all discussion stopped and the issue was put to rest. Howard’s style was to take a back seat on the discussions most of the time, but when he did speak, the room listened and followed his lead.
I just wanted the opportunity to say that the Ridgecrest Optimist Club was enhanced by the involvement of the Aulds, and Howards wisdom in mentoring the first board was essential. Howard’s many years in Optimism showed us what was productive and what was a waste of time.
Howard was honored at the Bakersfield quarterly convention two years ago by the Greater Southwest District for 45 years as an Optimist, and even though many others were given awards at that time for tenure in helping their community, the room once again fell silent as the moderator announced the words “45 years.” Howard was a lifetime member of Optimist International, and I have yet to meet anyone who has spent so many years in Optimism, let alone in the service of one community as they did it.
You were a great man among greats, Howard. May God’s peace rest on you as you move on to the next step in life.
