Pair arrested for suspected drugs

A driver and passenger were arrested on suspicion of drug possession during a routine traffic stop on Dec. 26. When Ridgecrest Police Officer Cushman discovered that the driver was unlicensed and on probation, he called Officers Groves and Clinton for backup. The driver was identified as Nichole Pate, 23, and the passenger as Paul Duff, 45.

A drug evaluation was conducted on Duff after he displayed symptoms of being under the influence of a controlled substance. During the search officers reportedly discovered some 66 grams of suspected methamphetamine, along with hypodermic needles, a digital scale and a stun gun.

Pate was arrested and charged with transportation for sale and possession of drug paraphernalia. Duff was arrested and charged with possession for sale, possession of a controlled substance, transportation for sale, being under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia and being a felon in possession of a stun gun.

Both subjects were transported to Bakersfield’s Central Receiving Facility, where they were booked. Pate is being held at Ridgecrest Jail in lieu of $60,000 bail, with a hearing set for Jan. 6 regarding the violation of probation on an earlier case.
