Second suspect arrested for July shooting

William Lofton, 53, was arrested Dec. 4 in connection with a shooting incident that happened in Ridgecrest back in July.

One man, Daniel Olivas, 31, was arrested Aug. 13 in connection with this same event and has been held at the Kern County Jail ever since. Olivas has been charged with attempted murder.

The shooting occurred in the 100 block of West Wilson Avenue July 25, at about 9 p.m. Ridgecrest police officers responded to a call of shots fired and determined that a shooting did in fact occur.

The victim was transported to Ridgecrest Regional Hospital for treatment, then airlifted to Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield.

During the investigation, officers and detectives obtained information implicating Olivas as the primary suspect. Olivas was at large for a time, but was arrested Aug. 13.

Police, who have been developing information on a possible second suspect in the case ever since, obtained a search warrant for Lofton’s residence in the 500 block of East Ridgecrest Boulevard.

Upon arrival at the apartment complex, detectives located Lofton and interviewed him.

After searching the residence, police found a firearm that now is suspected of being one of the weapons used during the shooting.

Lofton was arrested and later booked at the Kern County Jail. He is being held on $575,000 bail.

Olivas has been charged with four felonies — attempted murder, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, assault with firearm on a person, and possession of ammunition by a person prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm.

Olivas’ bail has been set at $1,735,000.
