Seniors brave storm for Thanksgiving feastIn a warm and lively setting filled with laughter, local seniors celebrated with a Thanksgiving feast at the Ridgecrest Senior Center. Fierce wet winds and pouring rain did not stop 95 senior citizens from getting together to share the meal.

“It is great to get together like this,” said 90-year-old Dottie Erlandson, vice president of the Happy Times Seniors, which organized the event. “We have turkey and the whole shebang for this Thanksgiving lunch.”

Weekday lunches at the center generally bring 40-45 seniors. Last week, in addition to “regulars” and guests at the center for the holiday meal, several military veterans accepted special invitations to the gathering.

After enjoying the special lunch, seniors had the opportunity to chat the afternoon away, challenge each other over puzzles, play card games or compete in a game or two of pool.

Holiday lunches are among many activities planned and hosted by Happy Times Seniors throughout the year, said Donna Williams, recreation activity volunteer and coordinator. As club president, she’s worked with Erlandson for more than 13 years.

Another popular activity is the monthly birthday lunch, complete with a local band playing and giving folks a chance to wear their dancing shoes and kick up their heels.

Ridgecrest Senior Center is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays, at 125 S. Warner St.
