Helen Mary Carr Cook MooreWith the death of Helen Mary Carr Cook Moore, 92, of Portland, Ore., on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, another part of our valley’s early history is gone.

Helen was born to Vernon Lloyd and Anabel Gaffney Carr on the family homestead in Inyokern, on Aug. 9, 1921, the sixth of seven children. The always enterprising Vernon had seen a midwife deliver others of his children, and he decided, “I can do this.” So it was that Helen was delivered by her father.

Local mourners will get the opportunity to pay their respects when a graveside service Celebration of Life and burial will be held in Trona, during the Centennial Celebration in March 2014.

The Carr family was among the earliest white settlers in Indian Wells Valley, with Vernon and Anabel arriving here in 1909. Helen attended school in Inyokern and graduated from Canoga Park High School in 1940. She married William “Bill” Stewart Cook in 1940 and moved to Trona, where Bill was a pipefitter in the American Potash and Chemical Corporation plant. Helen and Bill had three children: Elliot Roy Cook (Jan), deceased in 1986; John Vernon Cook (Jeanene), San Diego; and Margaret Ann Cook Hiller (Eldon), La Pine, Ore.

After Bill passed away, Helen married Orville Moore in 1950. Orville worked as a carpenter for AP&CC for 43 years. He died in Portland, Ore., in January 2001. Helen and Orville had one daughter, Jane Alice Moore Williams (Mark).

Helen was a stay-at-home wife and mother, with her hands full as she ensured that her children made it to Girl nd Boy Scouts, Job’s Daughters, DeMolay, sports practices and school activities. Helen was an excellent cook and enjoyed gardening, sewing, camping, fishing and teaching piano. She was a member of the Trona School Board and served a term as president. Helen and Orville moved in the 1980s to Oregon, where they spent their final retirement years.
